Denmark
Denmark,
officially the Kingdom of Denmark, is a Nordic country. Denmark proper,
which is the southernmost of the Scandinavian countries, consists of a
peninsula, Jutland, and an archipelago of 443 named islands, with the
largest being Zealand, Funen and the North Jutlandic Island. The
islands are characterised by flat, arable land and sandy coasts, low
elevation and a temperate climate. The southernmost of the Scandinavian
nations, Denmark lies southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and is
bordered to the south by Germany. The Kingdom of Denmark also includes
two autonomous territories in the North Atlantic Ocean: the Faroe
Islands and Greenland. Denmark has a total area of 42,924 km2 (16,573
sq mi), land area of 42,394 km2 (16,368 sq mi), and the total area
including Greenland and the Faroe Islands is 2,210,579 km2 (853,509 sq
mi), and a population of 5.8 million
Wrestling in Denmark
Wrestling
means "Brydning" in Danish. The national wrestling association is
therefore called "Danmarks Brydeforbund". Wrestling is traditionally
anchored in Denmark and there are 25 wrestling clubs with about 2500
members. As in all Scandinavian countries, Greco-roman is the preferred
style. In 2009, the Danish wrestling stronghold Herning hosted the
World Championships. Two medals were a sensational result for the host
country.

International Situation
Of course, for small states like Denmark it is difficult to keep up with international sports. Greco-roman
wrestling has an old tradition in Scandinavia and Denmark
was able to win ten Olympic medals in wrestling before World War II. In
1962 Bjarne Ansboel scored a surprise with silver at World
Championships. It took more than forty years until the next World Cup
medal. From the year 2004, a Danish world-class trio appeared for the
first time. Welterweight champion Mark Overmark Madsen became Junior
European Champion in this year. Madsen stayed in the top of the world
for years, in 2005, 2007 and 2009 he became Vice World Champion and in
2006 he won the WC bronze. He crowned his international career with an
Olympic silver medal 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. The same generation of
wrestlers also includes twin brothers Anders and Hakan Nyblom. Unlike
2005 World Cup was fifth in the 55 Kg class while his brother Hakan in
the same limit in 2008 at the European Championships and 2009 could win
bronze at the World Championships. Madsen and the Nyblom Twins are also
well known in German wrestling Leagues. For years they successfully
launched at various Bundesliga clubs. In female wrestling, Denmark is
less successful. In the early days of female wrestling came in 1987
Doethe Pedersen and Pia Buchholtz to World Cup medals.
The national team is currently trained by Szymon Kogut (from Poland).

National Situation
In Denmark, the
national tournaments are held only in The greco/roman style. Only the women
wrestle in freestyle. Due to the limited national competition, the Danes also
attend many tournaments in northern Germany
and Sweden.
Team fights are also only held in the greco/Roman style.
Some Polish
coaches (national coach Szymon Kogut, Jaroslaw Pyzara and Ryszard Swierad)
share their international experience in Denmark and have contributed a lot
to the development of Danish wrestling.
The
strongest clubs are: BK Thor Nykøbing Falster,
BK Thrott Aabyhøj and Herning BK.
The Danish
Wrestling Federation also conducts talent search in schools (Brydning i
Skolen), for which they have been developed simplified wrestling rules especially
for school wrestling.
NKC Nationale Kraftcenter
“The National Power
Center” was founded in
2016 and is located in Nykébing Falster. The modern training center for
wrestlers takes full care of the athletes to shape them from a talent to a
world-class fighter.
