Guam is an unincorporated
and organized territory of the United States in Micronesia in the western
Pacific Ocean.[4][5] It is the western most point and territory of the United States, along
with the Northern Mariana Islands. The capital city of
Guam is Hagåtña and the most populous
city is Dededo. The inhabitants of
Guam are called Guamanians, and they are American
citizens by birth. Indigenous Guamanians are the Chamorros, who are related to
other Austronesian natives of Eastern
Indonesia, the Philippines, and Taiwan. Guam has been a member of the Pacific Community since 1983.
In 2016, 162,742 people resided on Guam. Guam has an area of 210 square
miles (540 km2; 130,000 acres) and a population density of 775
per square mile (299/km2). In Oceania, it is the largest
and southernmost of the Mariana Islands and the largest
island in Micronesia. Among its municipalities, Mongmong-Toto-Maite has the highest
population density at 3,691 per square mile (1,425/km2), whereas Inarajan and Umatac have the lowest
density at 119 per square mile (46/km2). The highest point is Mount Lamlam at 1,332 feet
(406 m) above sea level. Since the 1960s, the
economy has been supported by two industries: tourism and the United States Armed Forces.

of the top teams in the Oceania region behind the Australia men's national basketball team and the New

champion of the Pacific
Games Basketball Tournament. Guam is home to various basketball
organizations, including the Guam Basketball Association.
Guam is
represented in rugby union by the Guam

Wrestling in Guam
Wrestling
in Guam is quite popular there. The Guam Amateur Wrestling Federation (GAWF) is
the governing body for Olympic wrestling on Guam. Mr. Antonio Aquino is not
only President of the of Wrestling in Guam, he is also President of the
"Oceania Council" of the internation Wrestling Federation UWW. The
GAWF participates in national, regional, continental and worldwide
competitions. The wrestling in Guam became popular mainly through US American
soldiers on the Pacific Island. As in the US, wrestling on Guam is largely done
at the high schools. In addition to the approximately ten high school wrestling
teams, there are also some classic wrestling clubs on Guam. In wrestling, free
style on Guam is much more popular than the Greco-Roman style. On Guam,
wrestling is also very popular among female athletes.
International Situation
For
big worldwide success in wrestling Guam has simply too few inhabitants and
athletes. Another handicap is the isolated island location in the midst of the
Pacific Ocean, which of course makes the international exchange extremely
expensive and difficult. Nonetheless, the Guamanian Association is doing a good
job and can look back already on five Olympic Games participacions. In the
"Oceanic" continental Wrestling Association, Guam plays a major role
and always represents a medal-loving team on this level.
