Italy


Italy officially the Italian Republic is a unitary parliamentary republic in Southern Europe. To the north, it borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia along the Alps. To the south, it consists of the entirety of the Italian Peninsula, Sicily, Sardinia–the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea–and many other smaller islands. The independent states of San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within Italy, while Campione d'Italia is an Italian exclave in Switzerland. The territory of Italy covers some 301,338 km2 and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 60.8 million inhabitants, it is the fifth most populous country in Europe, and the 23rd most populous in the world.

Rome, the capital of Italy, has for centuries been a political and religious centre of Western civilisation.

 

Wrestling in Italy

In Italy. Wrestling is called “Lotta”. The first Wrestling Federation was founded in 1902 and today, Wrestling is part of the multiple Combat Sports Federation: FIJLKAM
(Federazione Italiana Judo Lotta Karate Arti Martiziali).

International Situation.

Worldwide or even in Europe, Italy is not one of the top nations in wrestling. But Italy has always produced world class athletes. Vinzenzo Maenza was in the eighties and nineties one of the most successful wrestlers in the paper weight worldwide. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and in 1988 in Seoul he won gold. In 1992 in Barcelona, he won Olympic silver. He was inducted into the "Hall of Fame FILA" and is one of the biggest sports idols Italy. Giovanni Scillaci was 1992 European Champion in Featherweight (62kg) freestyle. At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing Andrea Minguzzi succeeded the sensation as  he won the gold medal in the 84 Kg Catergorie (greco/roman style). In the moment the born Cuban Frank Chamizo Marquez is the most succesfull wrestler of Italy with two world titles in Freestyle.

Frank Chamizo Marquez
(born July 10, 1992) is a male freestyle wrestler from Cuba naturalized Italian. Bronze medalist Wrestling World Championships 2010 in Moscow, Russia (for Cuba). He is a silver medalist in wrestling at the 2015 European Games for Men's freestyle in 65 kilograms range. At the Wrestling World Championships 2015 in Las Vegas he won the first Goldmedal in Freestyle Wrestling for Italy. 2017 Chamizo won his second World title in Paris.


National Situation

In Italy there are about 130 wrestling clubs. The Wrestling Federation is divided into 19 provincial associations. The provinces with the most clubs are Sicily (27 clubs)
Lazio - Rome (12), Emilia Romagna (10), Campania - Naples (9) and Sardinia (8).

The Italian Association FIJLKAM in Rome Ostia has a huge Olympic Centre with over 40 000m ². The Centro Olimpico FIJLKAM a Lido di Ostia hosted the wrestling world championships 1990th.

The club Fiamme d'Oro, Rome is a police sports club, there the athletes have the opportunity to pratice their respective sport under professional conditions. Overall, this club has won 70 Olympic medals. Also, the Olympic champion wrestler Andrea Minguzzi is a member of this association.

Some italian wrestlers took part in the german „Bundesliga“ The most known names are Michele Liuzzi, Giovanni Scilacci, Andrea Minguzzi, Daigoro Timoncini and Frank Chamizo.
