International situation
Big successes are missing for the Argentine wrestlers yet. At the
Olympic Games or World Championships
they could not reach a medal. The most successful wrestler is Patricia Alejandra Bermúdez (born1987 in Santiago del Estero). She was the only argentinian Olympian in wrestling in London in 2012 and competed in the freestyle 48 kg event at the 2016 Summer
Olympics in Rio and where she reached Place 5.
Bermudez is the first title holder
at the panamerican Championships for
Argentina. She already won several international tournaments in her
career.
Yuri Maier (born 1989 in Corrientes) won multiple international titles
representing his country and individually. Among his most outstanding results
he has been awarded a total of 12 medals at Pan American Championships in
several different age categories, making him the top Argentinian medalist in
wrestling history. Olympic Wrestling is not a popular sport in Argentina so
Yuri has had to cross the borders of his native country since the beginning of
his career, to stand out and get better training. He spent several seasons
training in countries such as Cuba,
America, Germany (Bundesliga), India
(Wrestling League) and Russia.
Because of this, he had to spend long periods away from home. Maier retired
from active wrestling and nowadays he belongs to IOC and UWW as „Sports and Development Manager”.
Agustín
Alejandro Destribats
(born in Cordoba
1997) is an Argentinian freestyle wrestler who currently competes at 65
kilograms. He qualified for the 20' Summer Olympics by defeating 19' World Cup
champion Zain Retherford (USA). In 2015 he won his first major title in the
senior level, as he earned a gold medal at the South American Championships
despite being only 18 years old. In 2016 he won his second
consecutive senior South American Championship[ and also claimed a Pan American title in the junior level. One of his most
successful years of his competitive career was 2017, as he claimed three South
American Championships (two at the junior level in both styles and one senior
title in freestyle),double-gold (freestyle and Greco at the junior Pan American
Championships.
